National Poll Results Show Most Do Not Have a Photo Protection Plan

AUSTIN, Texas, March 2 -- According to a GfK/ Roper Poll conducted for http://www.CheapStingyBargains.com, 77% of Americans admit that they do not regularly make back-up copies of photos for safe keeping onto a DVD or CD. One in six people have lost special photos that they valued.

Everyone's Gone Digital, But...

While 66% of respondents report using a digital camera, 47% wish we were still in the pre-digital age, when people gave you real copies of photos instead of digital ones.

Photo Albums Might be a Thing of the Past

50% of respondents admit we are taking digital photos, but not developing them.  While only 15% report permanently losing photos, one quarter (24%) develop photos but aren't backing them up.

Photo Protection Plans Are Not as Common as You Would Think

Only 6% are actually using an online storage site, 18% are developing photos and using either home or work computers as a back-up, and 18% are using a CD or DVD.  34% don't know what we're doing for back-up. (and it isn't just photos - only 13% of Americans say they backup their music / iTunes library more often than they back up their photos.)

IBM Completes Acquisition of National Interest Security Company

ARMONK, N.Y., March 2 -- IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced that it has completed the acquisition of National Interest Security Company, LLC (NISC), a privately held company headquartered in Fairfax, VA. Financial terms were not disclosed.  The companies had announced a definitive agreement in January to pursue the acquisition.

The business will be integrated into IBM Global Business Services, operating initially as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

SANDUSKY, Ohio, March 2 -- Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (NYSE:FUN), a publicly traded leader in regional amusement parks, water parks, vacation resorts and entertainment, has announced a summer-long, multi-dimensional partnership with MTV Games, a part of Viacom's MTV Networks  (NYSE:VIA)(NYSE:VIA.B) and the leading publisher of interactive music gaming worldwide.

An all-new interactive experience, called "Rock Band(TM), Live," will pile into the tour bus and travel across nine Cedar Fair parks this summer. In addition, a summer-long version of the show will blast the speakers at Canada's Wonderland near Toronto and the Company's flagship park, Cedar Point in Sandusky.

The high-energy, concert-like stage show features talented singers from across North America. But the cast will be missing one key piece of the show - YOU!

Prior to each show, guests will have the unique opportunity to engage and play the Rock Band(TM) video game and compete against their "band mates." Guests will compete playing the guitar, bass and drums gaming accessories.  The rockers with the top score will be invited on stage during the live show to play Rock Band songs (on Rock Band instruments) along with the live singers. (The winners will play on a gaming accessory with the singers.)

The show will feature numerous songs straight from the Rock Band video games ranging from classic to contemporary rock.

The "Rock Band(TM), Live" tour will kick off Memorial Day weekend at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania and will travel to the Company's other parks throughout the summer. The summer-long shows at Canada's Wonderland and Cedar Point will kick off in May and June, respectively.

NEW YORK, March 2 -- The National Association for Female Executives has named Verizon to the 2010 list of NAFE Top 50 Companies for Executive Women.  This is the third consecutive year that Verizon has been named to the list.

The list spotlights corporations with practices and employment records that benefit women and encourage their advancement to top management positions. To be named to the list, a company must have at least two women on its board of directors and track gender in jobs with profit-and-loss responsibility.

Women hold 29 percent of the senior management positions at Verizon, including key roles in designing and operating Verizon's advanced broadband and global IP networks, and overseeing key functions like supply chain services and real estate.

PEMCO Poll: Hand-Held Cell-Phone Usage Continues to Rise

SEATTLE, March 2 -- As Washington state legislators consider strengthening cell-phone and texting-related laws, a recent poll by PEMCO Insurance reveals that the number of Washingtonians who admit to illegally using a cell phone without a hands-free device while driving has more than doubled in the past 20 months, from 17 percent to 41 percent. The poll also reveals a more-alarming trend involving the illegal practice of texting while driving, with usage increasing from 3 percent of Washington drivers just 20 months ago to 22 percent in the most recent poll.

"As cell-phone use rises, so does our concern," said Jon Osterberg, PEMCO spokesperson.  "We've been tracking drivers' cell-phone use since 2004, and the trend shows drivers are talking and texting more and more. We're concerned about safety on our roads. Any distractions while driving put motorists at risk."

Though a growing number of drivers admit to using hand-held devices while driving, PEMCO's poll reveals parallel data indicating that an increasing number of respondents report using hands-free devices, as well - 17 percent in 2007 versus 43 percent in 2009.

PEMCO also looked at who, among respondents, engages in certain specific distracting behaviors involving an electronic device. The poll found that drivers under the age of 55 who also have teenage children at home are among the most frequent violators.

The poll also shows that more than 45 percent of the respondents who have Internet access from their phone admit they read or post to social networking sites while driving at least three times a month, and 21 percent of respondents read or post to a site six or more times per month.

Respondents report that they use their hand-held devices for driving-related purposes, though less frequently. Twenty-one percent of those who own a GPS device say they use it while driving more than six times a month. One in 10 respondents with a Web-enabled phone said four or more times per month, they retrieve traffic updates and learn road conditions from their phone while driving. Ten percent of drivers with a mobile phone also use their phone while driving to report someone violating the law at least once a month.

"As Olympia deliberates enforcing stricter cell-phone laws, we'll continue to track Washington drivers' attitudes and behaviors toward existing and potential laws," Osterberg said.

Currently, using a cell phone without a hands-free device and texting while driving are secondary offenses, meaning law enforcement cannot stop violators just for those violations. A bill being considered by lawmakers in Olympia would elevate those violations to a primary offense.

CBS and Sony Electronics Unveil New 3D Consumer Research Center

LAS VEGAS, March 2 -- As 3D technology and content continue to change the way consumers experience their entertainment, Sony Electronics and CBS today unveiled "The Sony 3D Experience." This research center and screening facility will focus on consumer preferences and perceptions toward 3D programming, as well as how broadcasters and studios can best deliver 3D content for viewing both in and out of the home.

The Sony 3D Experience will be located within the expanded CBS Television City research facility at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The new center is also being supported by RealD, which is providing its advanced 3D filters and eyewear to help complete the 3D experience.

"Just as Sony and CBS led the way to establishing some of the most compelling HD programming for consumers, the time is right for a dedicated resource devoted to studying 3D in all its forms," said Mike Fasulo, Sony Electronics' executive vice president and chief marketing officer. SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 -- Today at RSA Conference 2010, Microsoft Corp. outlined how the company continues to make progress toward its End to End Trust vision. In his keynote address, Scott Charney, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, explained how the company's vision for End to End Trust applies to cloud computing, detailed progress toward a claims-based identity metasystem, and called for public and private organizations alike to prevent and disrupt cybercrime.

"End to End Trust is our vision for realizing a safer, more trusted Internet," said Charney. "To enable trust inside, and outside, of cloud computing environments will require security and privacy fundamentals, technology innovations, and social, economic, political and IT alignment."

Further, Charney explained that identity solutions that provide more secure and private access to both on-site and cloud applications are key to enabling a safer, more trusted enterprise and Internet. As part of that effort, Microsoft today released a community technology preview of the U-Prove technology, which enables online providers to better protect privacy and enhance security through the minimal disclosure of information in online transactions. To encourage broad community evaluation and input, Microsoft announced it is providing core portions of the U-Prove intellectual property under the Open Specification Promise, as well as releasing open source software development kits in C# and Java editions. Charney encouraged the industry, developers and IT professionals to develop identity solutions that help protect individual privacy.

The company also shared details about a new partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems in Berlin on an interoperability prototype project integrating U-Prove and the Microsoft identity platform with the German government's future use of electronic identity cards.

As further evidence of how the company is enabling a safer, more trusted enterprise, Microsoft also today released Forefront Identity Manager 2010, a part of its Business Ready Security strategy. Forefront Identity Manager enables policy-based identity management across diverse environments, empowers business customers with self-service capabilities, and provides IT professionals with rich administrative tools.

In addition, Charney reviewed company efforts to creatively disrupt and prevent cybercrime. Citing Microsoft's recently announced Operation b49, a Microsoft-led initiative to neutralize the well-known Waledac botnet, Charney stated that while focusing on security and privacy fundamentals and threat mitigation remains necessary, the industry needs to be more aggressive in blunting the impact of cybercriminals. Operation b49 is an example of how the private sector can get more creative in its collective approach to fighting criminals online.

Apple is targeting the maker of the Google Nexus One, HTC, in a lawsuit over 20 patents.

EMC, its RSA Security Division, and Partners Announce Several Solutions and Services to Help Organizations Confidently Leverage the Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 -- During the opening keynote address at RSA® Conference 2010, Art Coviello, President of RSA, The Security Division of EMC (NYSE:EMC) urged his colleagues in the security industry to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented by increasingly virtual infrastructures and adopt a more expansive security vision by focusing on the IT transformations associated with cloud computing.  Industry leaders Dave Cullinane, Chief Information Security Officer at eBay, and Paul Maritz, Chief Executive Officer of VMware provided commentary in the areas of secure cloud and virtualized computing environments.

"Something is holding back the full realization of this cloud vision. And that - in a word - is security," said Coviello. "With 51% of CIOs* citing security as their greatest concern surrounding cloud computing, security has not kept pace with the evolution to the cloud reflected in today's increasingly virtualized and hyper-extended enterprises. We have severely diminished vision as a result and it shows. In short, people everywhere must be able to trust the cloud even if they literally and metaphorically can't see it."

The 15-year information security veteran noted that having a virtual layer embedded in the technology stack provides the industry with a rare opportunity to get a security 'do over' capable of providing even better security than we have in physical infrastructures today. As a result, organizations can shift from infrastructure-centric to information-centric policy and concentrate on what is most important - the information and who gets access - rather than a meaningless perimeter or mere plumbing.

During the address Coviello encouraged the industry to work towards facilitating private cloud infrastructures that are secure, compliant, and governed in a manner that provides confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. He encouraged the audience to view the private cloud as a journey that organizations will take at their own pace and gain benefits at every step along the way. He went on to outline what RSA sees as the four, well-defined stages on this journey to the private cloud:

  1. Initial adoption of virtualization to consolidate non-mission critical
     infrastructure, like test and development systems as well as low risk
     applications. It compels the enterprise to become adept with the tools
     of virtualization and to begin the process of "hardening" the virtual
     infrastructure.
  2. Virtualize critical business applications and ensure the organization
     maintains the same level of visibility to the state of compliance in
     the virtual environment to the physical infrastructure.
  3. Develop internal clouds and operate their information infrastructure as
     a utility consisting of a fully virtualized and automated data center
     where application workloads are policy- and service-level driven.
  4. Outsource infrastructure to external service providers. This phase
     requires careful selection of service providers based on their
     demonstrated ability to "enforce policy, prove compliance and manage
     multi-tenancy."

Coviello concluded, "If we can get security built into the virtual infrastructure from the get-go we can not only have visibility and manageability but risk decision points, and controls everywhere. In short, the cloud will turn the way we deliver security inside out. And information security will enable cloud computing to take full advantage of the Internet turning our current IT models inside out as well. This means we can deliver new waves of efficiency, agility and collaboration for organizations of all sizes."

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 2 -- The Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs (SVASE) today announced the 2010 edition of  "Launch: Silicon Valley" will be held June 8, 2010, and simultaneously issued a call for presenters. Up to 30 exciting young startups from the fields of information technology, mobility, digital media, next generation internet, life sciences and clean tech will be selected to present at Launch: Silicon Valley before an audience of several hundred of the most influential people in the Valley.

"Especially in the current economic environment, young companies are looking for a highly effective and cost-efficient way to introduce themselves in the marketplace," said SVASE President & CEO Chris Gill. "Launch: Silicon Valley provides a valuable entree to investors and other influencers who can help shape their success."

Selected companies will be invited to present on stage for 6-minutes, followed by 4 minutes of constructive feedback, from a panel of professional investors. SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 -- Zeum: San Francisco's Children's Museum, a hands-on, multimedia arts and technology experience for kids, announced today that it has teamed with Brightcove, the industry-leading online video platform, to enable children and their families to easily view and share their clay animation movies produced in Zeum's Animators Studio.

The Animators Studio, one of Zeum's most popular exhibits, is a space where kids are encouraged to work with one another and explore their creativity by building clay models and bringing them to life through stop-motion animation.

Prior to partnering with Brightcove, Zeum's Educators and ZeumMaster interns underwent a costly and time-consuming process of burning DVDs of large video files for each visitor. The issue was effectively resolved with an environmentally-friendly, Zeum-branded experience using Brightcove's platform.
