Trying to Install HD on old HP zv5000 Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:29:53 PM#132745Perm Link
I just got a brand new HD for my old zv5000 I'm running XP Home the new HD is a WD PATA 2.5" 320GB IDE drive Everytime I start he computer with the XP cd in the drive it says that it cannot find any harddrive!!!! I also bought a gb RAM and I think all the problems came from that. How can I make the laptop to recognized the HD so I can start from scratch with a fresh install of XP??
Have you tried to see if the computer BIOS sees it?
Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today? Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection. Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!
Is it possible (highly unlikely) that you have a specialized AHCI controller in the laptop and Windows XP needs a driver before it is able to see the HDD?
Try to download the chipset drivers and load them up at installation. You'll need a floppy drive... It's been a long time since I've installed Windows. I believe that's the case.
You can make sure the BIOS is set to emulate IDE instead of AHCI (if that's even an option). That should make Windows see the drive.

It's seeing the HD now I am formatting with Killdisk. It's just when I installed XP like halfway there it says it cannot install something and stop. Next time I will grab the error.
It might be a problem with the XP install disc itself, as a heads up.

Well, grab the error and we will see where to go from there.

The simplest would be that the CD is scratched and can't be read anymore. See if you can borrow someone's CD to do the installation or download an ISO of it... Since you have the license, you can get another copy of the CD without legal issue.
There are other problems that may be the cause, but the above is most likely.
Edit: As above, RAM is a likely second culprit.

You are absolutely right!!! I pulled it out. And now I'm at selecting the language in the install mode. So I guess it's a go. So I guess the slot for the RAM right underneath the keyboard is the master rail? I pulled that one out but the system was doing the same thing. I put the old RAM in that slot and it worked.
Now.... Is there a list of compatibility for RAM and that laptop? On the HP site it says the max is 2gb. If that's the case I will do 2x1gb but this time I will bring the laptop with me..
Now I'm having some other issues, not sure if I should start a new thread or continue with that one. It's regarding my wireless connection.
I see my network, I hit connect I enter the network key but it says Not Connected!!!! All my computers at home have been setup wirelessely for quite some times now, that's a fresh XP install and I can pin point what I am missing!!!!!!
I have a cable modem and a wireless router. All my other laptops in the house work fine on the Wifi
[UPDATE] Now I can't connect to the internet evven with an ethernet cable!!!
Whoa good question I know some are I was getting connection before, but then I realized that on startup I didn't get any sound!!! Where can I get all the drivers? I know with one of my Dell I went to the Dell side but I had to pick and choose the drivers one by one. So you really know what you're looking for. Any drivers in bundle?
I found that
